What is Circle of Security?
Circle of Security is an evidence-based parenting program designed to help parents and caregivers understand and respond to the needs of their children. The program is based on the idea that children need a secure attachment relationship with their caregivers in order to thrive and develop healthy relationships with others.
The Circle of Security program is based on four key principles:
1. Secure attachment:
Children need to feel safe, secure, and protected by their caregivers. When caregivers respond to their child’s needs in a consistent and nurturing way, they help their child to feel secure and develop a strong attachment.
2. Emotional regulation:
Children need help from their caregivers to manage their emotions. Caregivers can help their child to identify and express their emotions in a healthy way, and provide comfort and support when they are upset.
3. Exploring the world:
Children need the freedom to explore and learn about the world around them, while still feeling safe and protected by their caregivers.
4. Repairing ruptures:
Even in the most secure attachment relationships, there may be times when there are misunderstandings or conflicts. Caregivers can help to repair these ruptures by acknowledging their mistakes, apologising, and working to rebuild trust and connection with their child.
The Circle of Security program uses videos and discussions to help parents and caregivers learn how to identify and respond to their child’s needs. The program emphasises the importance of building a secure attachment relationship with your child, and provides practical strategies for promoting healthy emotional development in your child.
The Circle of Security program is widely used in parenting classes and therapy sessions, and has been shown to be effective in improving parent-child relationships and promoting healthy child development.
